Greetings from Colebrook Town Hall.

Our annual Town meeting will be held on Monday, October 21st, at 8 p.m. at Colebrook Town Hall. At this time, we will vote on candidates for member and alternate positions on the: Planning & Zoning Commission (3 positions); Zoning Board of Appeals (3 positions); Recreation Board (3 positions); and Historic District Commission (2 positions). On Thursday, September 26th, at 7 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at Town Hall, the Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission will host an informational meeting to discuss options for cannabis regulations for the Town of Colebrook. The meeting will be conducted by Glenn Chalder of Planimetrics and will include a presentation of options for cannabis regulations for municipalities and sample language developed by P&Z. This is an opportunity to participate in the creation of an ordinance (or a Planning and Zoning regulation) concerning cannabis activity in our Town.

Our next household hazardous waste collection day is Saturday, October 19th, at the Torrington Water Pollution Control Facility at 252 Lower Bogue Road in Harwinton. This week, Town Treasurer Melanie Knap hosted King, King & Associates as they conducted fieldwork and onsite testing for their annual audit of the town’s financial records. Through their audit, they seek to ensure that appropriate financial controls are in place and that we are in compliance with state and federal regulations that apply to grant recipients. Colebrook is one of 24 municipalities audited by King, King & Associates.

This past Sunday, nearly 60 people came out for Gerri Griswold’s presentation, “Bats are Good Guys,” sponsored by the Colebrook Land Conservancy. In case you missed it, you can learn more about these fascinating flying mammals here.

Yesterday, Colebrook Consolidated School students and staff joined their counterparts from Barkhamsted, Hartland and Norfolk at Barkhamsted Elementary School’s River Day event. Students enjoyed a day of outdoor activities including hiking, fly tying and casting. They also learned about insect life and beaver habitats.

Northwestern Regional School District #7 is looking for veterans, retired policemen and first responders who need assistance with fall cleanup for its participation in the House of Heroes Project. The Wall That Heals, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica & Mobile Education Center, will be on display at Charter Oak Park in Manchester, Conn., this weekend. The Wall That Heals is a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Learn more here.

Upcoming community events

Tomorrow (September 20th), the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs will host its annual STAND DOWN event to provide Connecticut’s Veterans, Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel, and their immediate families “one stop” access to programs and services. Learn more here.

On Sunday, September 29th, at 2:00 PM at the Little Red Barn brewery in Winsted, the Beardsley Library will be hosting a celebration for its 150th anniversary. Tickets are $35/person and include one drink, appetizers, dessert, a door prize ticket, a keepsake glass, historical library booklets, music and a good time with the librarians. On Saturday, October 5th, the Colebrook Consolidated School (CCS) fifth grade class will host its annual Pumpkin & Mum Sale from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the school parking lot. In addition to pumpkins & mums, hot food, coffee and cider will be available, along with raffle prizes and a bake sale. Proceeds benefit the CCS 2026 class trip.

Later that day, the Colebrook Associates present Oktoberfest from 4-6 p.m. at Colebrook Town Hall. Beer, wine, gin, kombucha tea, food and music will be featured. Tickets are $30 and can be reserved by calling 860.469.2208 or by emailing colebrookassociates@gmail.com.
