Last week, a Colebrook tradition continued as our third grade class took their lessons at the Rock School<www.colebrookhistoricalsociety.org/rock-school-history/> located at the intersection of Colebrook Road and Sandy Brook Road. The building was erected during the summer of 1779 and remained in use from that date until it closed in 1911. The Rock School, owned by the Colebrook Historical Society, is believed to be the only colonial era school in Connecticut that has not been modernized in any way. As a bookend to last week’s day at the Rock School, yesterday our third graders toured the Seymour Inn and viewed the many historical items on display there, including this year’s exhibit that salutes Colebrook veterans.
Planning is underway for the 81st Colebrook Labor Day Fair, to be held on Saturday, September 5th. Volunteers are needed. Last week, Colebrook Consolidated School Superintendent Bob Gilbert announced his intent to retire at the end of the calendar year. During the next few months, the Board of Ed will consider and develop a succession plan. Closer to his retirement, there will be an opportunity for the community to thank Bob for his service to our town.
