This week, we received Connecticut Department of Transportation approval to proceed with STEAP-grant funded paving on Deer Hill, Gaylord, Millbrook and Phelps Roads, and the Center Firehouse parking lot. Details to follow when a schedule is established.
Personal property declarations have been mailed to all known businesses in town, as well as owners of known motor vehicles, including campers, that are not registered or are registered outside the State of Connecticut, that in the normal course of operation, most frequently leave from and return to, or remain in, Colebrook. Completed declarations are due in the Assessor’s Office by the end of business on, or postmarked by, November 3rd, 2025.
The Colebrook Planning & Zoning Commission recently finalized our new Town Plan of Conservation & Development (POCD). Our POCD is a state-mandated, 10-year comprehensive plan outlining our vision for land use, housing, economic development, and infrastructure. Our pilot food scrap recycling initiative kicked off this week. Bear-resistant collection stations have been delivered to Town Hall and the Forge Firehouse. Weekly pickups will begin on Tuesday, September 23rd, and weekly on Tuesdays thereafter. The collection stations will be open 24/7.
To date, nearly 60 food scrap recycling kits have been distributed. Kits include: a countertop bin; an initial supply of BPI-certified biodegradable 3-gallon bags; and a storage/transportation 6-gallon bin. We have a handful left. As noted earlier, beginning October 1st, bear-resistant curbside rollout carts will be available to Colebrook residents for $8.50/month (or $102/year). For residents who currently have bear carts through USA Recycling, you will receive the new, lower rate when your current annual contract expires. The Community & Senior Center served 34 ham dinners today at the September Birthday Luncheon. Breakfast is available every Tuesday from 8-9:15 a.m. for $6 (no reservation needed). Lunch is every Thursday at noon for $7, with advance registration requested by 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
This past week, the Colebrook Fair Committee met to evaluate this year’s Fair and to kick off discussions for the 81st annual Colebrook Fair, to be held on September 5th, 2026. Yesterday, Colebrook Consolidated School students and staff joined their counterparts from area schools at Barkhamsted Elementary School’s annual River Day event. Our students enjoyed a day of outdoor activities and learned about insect life and river habitats.
The Colebrook Associates Food Pantry, located in the vestibule of the Community & Senior Center, needs breakfast foods and hygiene products. Donations may be left at the pantry or in the collection bin in the post office.

There will be a hazardous waste collection day on Saturday, November 8th, at the Torrington Water Pollution Control Facility in Harwinton. Details to follow in coming weeks.

Upcoming events
The Colebrook Consolidated School Fifth-Grade Class Pumpkin & Mum Sale will be held on Saturday, October 4th, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school parking lot. Pumpkins, mums, food, bake sale items and raffles are included. Raffles will be drawn at 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit the 2027 Nature’s Classroom trip.
Flu vaccines for those age 18 and older will be available on Thursday, October 9th, from 9-11 a.m. at the Community & Senior Center. This program is being offered through the Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Litchfield County.
On Friday, October 17th, the Colebrook Historical Society will host their final Friday Night Gathering of the season. Museum Educator, Annie O’Brien, will share the harrowing story of witches in colonial New England. Refreshments and mingling at 7 p.m. at the Historical Society, program at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
