Proposed General Code Ordinance Project ~ Vote at Town Meeting on May 4, 2026
Town Clerk Debi McKeon updated the Board of Selectmen on the progress of the General Code Ordinance Project. Alyssa Correll moved that the proposed ordinance be considered at the Annual Town Budget Meeting in May to accept the Town of Colebrook Code as presented. AJ Ruwet seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
For more information, a copy of the proposed ordinance is on file in the Town Clerk’s Office and may be reviewed during regular business hours or on the town website www.townofcolebrook.org
Greetings from Colebrook Town Hall.
On Monday, May 4th, the Town of Colebrook will hold its Annual Budget Meeting at 8 p.m. in the second-floor meeting room at Town Hall.
The Annual Budget Meeting adjourning to referendum is a statutory requiremt and does not allow for public discussion of (or a vote on) the referendum questions.
We will, however, consider two ordinances at the May 4th Budget Meeting. One is to accept the Town of Colebrook Code, as presented.
A Connecticut town’s General Code is the codified set of local ordinances and regulations that govern municipal operations, including zoning, traffic, safety, and public property. These are established under authority from the Connecticut General Statutes which empower municipalities to manage local affairs. For more information, a copy of the proposed ordinance is on file in the Town Clerk’s Office. It may be reviewed during regular business hours, or on the town website at www.townofcolebrook.org.
The other ordinance being considered at the Annual Budget Meeting is to authorize the town to join the Northwest Regional Recovery Authority. This will enable us to collaborate with other municipalities in the northwest corner to explore options for managing solid waste.
On Tuesday, May 5th, taxpayers will have the opportunity to vote on town and Region 7 budgets for fiscal year 2026/27. The total amount being requested is $7,523,524, a 2.1% increase from the current year budget.
Any Colebrook property owner with $1,000 in assessed value is eligible to vote in this referendum. Copies of town and Region 7 budgets are available in the Town Clerk’s office or on the town website here.’
Absentee ballots are available for the May 5th referendum during regular Town Hall hours through next Monday, May 4th. For more information, please contact Town Clerk Debi McKeon at 860.379.3359, ext. 203.
Weather permitting, road oiling will take place on Sandy Brook Road between the new bridge and Route 8 next Thursday and Friday (May 7th and 8th). Expect minor delays. Sweeping will take place in mid-May, and loose stone will be recycled and re-used in July. Beginning on May 12th, the parking lot at the Center Firehouse will be milled and repaved.
The Colebrook Conservation Commission is looking for volunteers to be regular and alternate members. Meetings are held quarterly on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. If you’re interested in being appointed to the Commission by the Board of Selectmen, please contact me at bbremer@colebrooktownhall.org.
Last year, the Conservation Commission and volunteers mapped and flagged approximately 30 locations in town where the invasive plant, Japanese knotweed, is growing along local and state roads. Left unchecked, knotweed can quickly take over an entire area. To learn more, or to volunteer to help the Commission with knotweed control efforts, contact Commission Chair Joyce Hemingson at jhem1022@gmail.com.
